This is different from audio restoration. It's the faithful re-recording of audio onto a new medium for the purpose of preserving the audio for the future. Efforts are sometimes made to extend the life of the source medium containing the original audio, but the main purpose is to preserve the audio itself by careful re-recording.

No matter what the recording medium - wire, magnetic tape, audio cassette, phonograph records, lacquer acetate disk's, 78's, or DAT tapes - all recording media deteriorate over time. If the original medium has deteriorated extensively and the audio cannot be adequately restored, then re-recording may be good option to archive the audio.
